The Humiliating Defeat of Major General Horatio Gates during the Revolutionary War By Jeannette Holland Austin
On August 16, 1780, British forces under Lieutenant General Charles and Lord Cornwallis routed the American forces of Major General Horatio Gates about 10 miles north of Camden, South Carolina, strengthening the British hold on the Carolinas following the capture of Charleston. Gates had defeated the British at Saratoga, however, suffered a humiliating defeat at Camden, South Carolina which almost resulted in a court martial. he never held a field command again.
