Huguenots Settlers to South Carolina

Cooper River near Charleston SC
When considering the early colony of South Carolina, I think of the beautiful city of Charleston, first a village which supported traffic from England and the West Indies, then a thriving state.  It is a major resource of genealogical records, whether ancestor were in SC or GA.  Charleston was actually established in 1670 along the coast. While French Huguenots navigated the Cooper River into the village where they build a church, Englishmen established merchandising houses which helped to support the surrounding low country plantations. Charleston, facing the threat of the Spanish in Florida, prospered for many years before Georgia was a colony (1733).  Also, during the early years, many Georgia colonists (unable to survive economically) ran away to Charleston and never returned. Thus, Charleston was the center of social life, agriculture and expansion and by the time of the American Revolution was one of the richest colonies in America.  Therefore, Charleston is a major resource for genealogists and the old wills and testaments survive.  These documents are available to members of South Carolina Pioneers
