Walnut Grove Plantation in SC #history #southcarolinapioneers.net

Walnut Grove Plantation
By Jeannette Holland Austin

This plantation was constructed upon a royal land grant in 1765 by Charles Moore. The walnut trees, which gave the plantation its name, were planted by his daughter, Margaret Katherine Moore in 1800. The complex contained a number of out buildings, including a 1777 kitchen, barn, smokehouse and well house. It also housed the first school to the area, known as the Rocky Spring Acaemy. Open to the public. 8 miles southeast of Spartanburg near the intersection of Routes I-26 and 221.
