Sandbars Captured the British on Sullivan Island By Jeannette Holland Austin
During 1775, Robert Jordan enlisted for six months as a private in the company of Captain Francis Marion, 2nd South Carolina Continental Regiment. He fought at the battle of Sullivan's Island near Charleston. As the british entered the harbor,a win was expected, however, several of their vessels miscalculated the shallow water. Three or four vessels became bogged down on sandbars as they attempted to send landing parties onto the island. Expecting to win, the Brtish found themselves solely defeated. The excitement of the win for the patriots was a good beginning, however, eventually the British seized Charleston and made life miserable for its residents. After this win, Jordan went on to become Sgt. of the Horse (1781) and was later promoted to Quartermaster under General Marion when they attacked the British at Pee Dee Swamp. There are so many interesting accounts and thrilling stories contained in the pensions of soldiers that it behooves the genealogist to study all facets of it.
